Education  Programs

Lecture Series  - Every year our Muesum sponsors a series of lectures covering a wide variety of subjects of interest to Bay area residents and visitors, such as history of watermen and the fishing industry as well as the latest status of programs affecting the Bay.  This year the RFM is teaming with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to present a series called "Mini-School of Marine Science - Challenges on the Horizon."

Natural History of Chesapeake Bay

The presentation will address three "stories" from the geological history of the Chesapeake Bay Region: the "Chesapeake Bay Impact Crater" that was blasted into the earth's crust about 33 million years ago; the development of Chesapeake Bay as we know it over the past million years; and the continuing rise in sea level that began about 15 thousand years ago. Questions and informal discussion will be welcome.

Oyster Float Workshop-  Our Museum periodically sponsors workshops in construction and operation of floats used for oyster growth in local waters.  Raising a relatively small number of oysters, usually 1,000, at one's dock is a simple and easy way to have oysters for consumption (after approximately two years) and to add to the water-filtering function of the oyster population; a critical factor in restoring the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

Next  Workshop: September 21st, 10am at Bethany Church next-door to the RFM.
Following a short presentation by Dr. Jim Wesson, Head of Oyster Replenishment for VIMS,
instruction on fabrication and space to construct floats will be provided.
Registration by September 7th is required to cover materials for your float.
Cost depends on the type float to be fabricated:$75 for a Taylor float;  $35 for a EEEOHM Module.
Send a check to the RFM, PO Box 306, Reedville, 22539.
Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
Oyster seeds will be purchased on the day of the workshop (about $27 per 1,000.)

Please contact Cal or Jan Boyd through the Museum at (804) 453-6529
if you have any questions.

Watch for announcements of future workshops.

Special Tours and Field Trips - We sponsor field trips for both children and adults, tailored to the particular needs of the group.   This past November, the entire fourth and fifth grades of Northumberland Elementary School, and the eighth grade of Christchurch School visited the museum.  The fourth and fifth graders had SOL objectives emphasized during their visits.
